Winner of the 2020 Olivier Award for the Best New Play, Leopoldstadt, written by Tom Stoppard and directed by Patrick Marber returns to the Wyndham's Theatre for a 12 week run.
Leopoldstadt was, at the beginning of the 20th Century, a crowded and old Jewish quarter of Vienna. The story follows Hermann Merz, a manufacturer and baptised Jew married to Gretl, a Catholic. Gathering in the heart of the city, the Merz extended family make up the heart of drama which is both intimate and momentous. Chartering the journey of war, revolution and the holocaust through the lives of the prosperous Austria-Jewish Merz family.
Having initially opened in 2020, the play ran for seven weeks ahead of being closed due to the pandemic but was exceptionally well-regarded by critics, who deemed it to be a 'Masterwork' (Evening Standard) and 'An unforgettable play from the heart' (The Telegraph).
