Burlington House: Royal Astronomical Society

The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) moved into Burlington House in 1874. Part of the extension to Burlington House, to provide accommodation for learned societies, the building was refurbished in 2007. The RAS is the oldest astronomical society in the world and has been encouraging and promoting the study of astronomy and geophysics since 1820.

The RAS is hosting a self guided tour where you can expect to see the architectural features of the building, and learn about the history of astronomy and the Society which will include a special display of books, manuscripts and artefacts in our double-height, galleried library. Actors will also bring to life John & Caroline Herschel in the Council Room and there will be a short film in the Lecture Theatre.
