Marina Abramović's deep admiration for Maria Callas goes way back to when she was just fourteen and first heard Maria Callas perform in Yugoslavia. That moment sparked a lifelong connection based on their shared love for the arts.
In this performance, Maria Callas, often known as 'La Divina' or 'the divine one,' comes back to life through some of her most famous arias from beloved operas like La Traviata, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Otello, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Norma. These iconic arias are complemented by new music composed by Marko Nikodijević.
The experience is made even more captivating with short films featuring Marina Abramović and the talented actor Willem Dafoe. Throughout the show, Abramović takes on the role of the sleeping Callas, haunted by her unforgettable performances, all set against the backdrop of Callas's Paris apartment.
