Obi Agwam: Love letters to you and me
Exhibition
A new collection of paintings and sculptures made by New York-based artist Obi Agwam during his time at the Royal Academy Schools.
‘Love letters to you and me’ is a presentation of new artworks by Obi Agwam exploring identity, love, memory and the importance of imagination.
Agwam's work lies in the realm of portraiture with a visual language referencing American cartoon aesthetics and African American imagery.
“If this memory were a person, what would it look like?” is the question that informs Agwam’s artwork in this new series.
Agwam’s work originates from his journal writings, through a process of alchemising moments of reflection and emotional vulnerability into unique portraits; portraits of imaginary subjects made from real memory and conversation.
For 40 years, the Royal Academy Schools has welcomed American artists as Starr Fellows, a placement that has enriched our institution and provided transformative opportunities. This enduring tradition is possible thanks to the exceptional generosity of the Starr Foundation.
