Les Misérables began as a French-language concept album in 1983, but it was Cameron Mackintosh’s collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company that adapted it into the British stage production we know and love. Opening at the Barbican Centre in 1985, the show quickly moved to the West End and later to Broadway, where it set new records and captured the hearts of audiences around the world.

Originally The Queen's Theatre, the Sondheim Theatre is a popular venue on Shaftesbury Avenue in London's West End and home to the international award-winning musical, Les Misérables. When the theatre opened on 8th October 1907, it was a twin to the Hicks Theatre, now the Gielgud Theatre. Both the theatres followed W. G. R. Sprague's design.
